AR/VR in
   Games

Written by | Shan Chang

AR/VR plays a crucial and pioneering role in the gaming industry. By using VR technology, users can feel as if they are part of a non-physical world and experience the sensation physically. With AR technology, users can view the world around them with additional fancy decorations through the camera and screen of their mobile device. The experience is similar to seeing a whole new world across the lens of the device. There are two examples of games that utilize AR/VR technology.

Pokémon GO

In terms of augmented reality games, it is impossible to ignore the success of Pokémon GO. As of early 2019, the game had more than one billion downloads worldwide. To look for where the Pokémon locate in the digital world, players have to move in the physical world as well. It takes people to the road, the park, and the beach.

By combining location tracking with cameras and using AR technology, players can view digital Pokémon in the real world through their mobile devices. As part of the game, players are encouraged to examine public landmarks, look for virtual loot, and capture Pokémon. It allows players to view different Pokémon species on their phones and use virtual tools to capture them

VR Escape room

Do you recall the last experience you had playing escape room? A player is tasked with discovering clues regarding a missing family member in a haunted house and solving the puzzles step-by-step in the darkroom. While the limited space and room can hardly make players feel like they are immersed in the environment, they are more likely to be afraid or anxious.

By contrast, VR technology extends the game to a whole new dimension in this sphere. While wearing the VR headset, the surroundings will be transformed into a magical universe, which will allow the user to experience the kind of atmosphere that can rarely be experienced in the real world while solving puzzles. Users can, for example, share an immersive experience whenever a pyramid is about to crash, ghosts are about to escape, or a galaxy is on the verge of destruction in an escape room. By putting on the VR headset, users are taken to different times and places, requiring them to think under greater pressure.

Take an example of an escape room game by Ubisoft, called "ESCAPE THE LOST PYRAMID." A few players need to group up and escape from the pyramid of Nebka. Through VR headsets, players will see the realistic environment and experience an impossible adventure.
