While Augmented Reality is not an entirely new concept in sports, we have seen an increasing number of augmented components being implemented into the viewing experience for fans in recent years. Augmented reality is already being utilized to display game-action and replays.

Along with AR being used to enhance the experience of watching sporting events, we are also beginning to see sporting events which are entirely virtual.

In addition, virtual reality is being used in sports to develop and accelerate training programs for athletes. Virtual reality enables athletes to train virtually outside of their usual training environments. Therefore, athletes are able to train on the go at any time and anywhere. Virtual reality training is available with Oculus Move. As well as tracking your calories and progress, this application allows you to set daily fitness goals. Currently, VR training is being used in many different sports, including football, baseball, martial arts, soccer, and other major sports.

Stadiums are revolutionizing the experience for fans using Mixed Reality. NFL team the Carolina Panthers AR show is a perfect example of immersive virtual effects to enhance the experience for fans.

Virtual training

In recent years there has been an explosion in virtual sports training. In the video on the left is Sports VTS and N-iX training for quarterbacks called QBSIM. This training solution utilizes motion-tracking technology to provide quarterbacks with a realistic training environment. Using a mixed reality environment, the players can master their skills at the lowest cost without being exposed to any injury risks.
