We witnessed an increase in "virtual" music events during the pandemic. For now, it seems that the use of AR/VR technology will continue to be utilized in concert experiences despite resistance from concert-goers and music lovers. Travis Scott and Fortnite are two prominent examples of AR/VR use in the mainstream. As part of the Fortnite video game platform, Travis Scott performed a live virtual reality concert titled Astronomical in the spring of 2020. Concert-goers and music enthusiasts can experience shows at home using an AR/VR headset.

The future of AR and VR in the music industry looks like it will be full of more innovation and surprises, but we should not expect them to replace live music but rather to enhance and provide an alternative. The global pandemic introduced a new avenue and need for immersive experiences. Also, for those who cannot attend live concerts for various reasons, from medical concerns to incapacity, the ability to experience things virtually allows for greater accessibility.

Augmented Reality in live music concerts has a lot to offer in terms of adding to the experience. On the right side, you can see, that the users' experience is being augmented by adding the notes live as the orchestra plays.

vr concerts

What's a VR concert experience look like in 2022? VR events involve real-world participants (via avatars) participating in a live stream of a real-world artist or band performing in a video game or other virtual environment. Virtual reality does not only pertain to music videos. Bands, musicians, and performers can transform live performances and events into a shared experience for their fans by using immersive elements. Virtual reality applications for concerts are being driven by platforms such as Oculus' Next VR.

The training of musicians is another useful and interesting application of immersive technologies. The picture on the right illustrates a young woman learning to play a real piano using a Virtual Reality headset, the Oculus Quest 2, which provides virtual and augmented reality components to help her learn and improve her skills.
